Choreography by Julia Patella is recognizable by its rigorous musicality, dramaturgical foundation, and characters with vibrant personalities. She spins together influences from tap, jazz, hip-hop, ballet, percussion, and physical theatre to form a dance performance discipline she dubs “contemporary-theatrical.” She dreams of the theoretical and practical integration of theatre and dance arts, believing that the forms have much to learn from one another through collaboration.

Patella is an award-winning choreographer and director for musical theatre (Alive: The Mary Shelley Musical, Sunday in the Park With George, Damn Yankees), film (“On the Sidewalk, at Night”, official selection for 10+ national and international film festivals), collaborative/experimental performance (Circus Hamlet, The Simon Suites), and straight theatre (The Elif Collective: Waiting For Godot, This is Our Youth). Patella has been recognized with choreography awards from Artists Simply Human and Revel Dance Convention, and is a recipient of the Abrons Arts Center Dancemakers Grant. Julia holds a BA in Dance and Sociology from Barnard College of Columbia University where she studied tap under Dormeshia.
